Choosing a Caribbean island isn’t as simple as finding the prettiest beach on Instagram.
I’ve planned enough Caribbean vacations to know that the island one traveler absolutely loves can be completely wrong for someone else. Some travelers want miles of white sand and turquoise water. Others would be bored sitting on a beach for seven days and want mountains, waterfalls and adventure. Some want an all-inclusive resort where they never have to think about dinner reservations. Others want to rent a car and explore.
There isn’t one “best” Caribbean island.
There is a Caribbean island that’s best for the way you like to travel.
So instead of asking, “What’s the best island in the Caribbean?” start with a better question:
What do you want your Caribbean vacation to actually feel like?
Here are some of my favorite matches.
If You Want Miles of Gorgeous White-Sand Beaches
Consider: Turks & Caicos, Anguilla, Antigua or Aruba
If the beach is the main event, these are some of the first islands I’d consider.
Turks & Caicos
This is where I’d look for that quintessential Caribbean image: powdery white sand and incredibly clear turquoise water. Grace Bay is the star, and Turks & Caicos is particularly well suited to travelers looking for an upscale, relaxing beach vacation.
Anguilla
Anguilla combines gorgeous beaches with a quieter, more sophisticated feel and an excellent dining scene. It’s especially appealing to couples who want understated luxury rather than a huge resort atmosphere.
Antigua
Antigua is famous for its abundance of beaches, and you’ll find everything from larger stretches of sand to beautiful secluded coves. It’s one of my favorites for couples and honeymooners who want the beach to be a major part of their trip.
Aruba
Aruba offers long stretches of white sand, beautiful water and a dry, sunny climate. It’s also an excellent choice if you want to get out of the resort and explore rather than staying in one place all week.
If You Want Beaches AND Adventure
Consider: St. Lucia, Dominica or Puerto Rico
If you love the idea of the Caribbean but know you’ll get restless after a few days of doing nothing, look for an island that gives you more than a beautiful beach.
St. Lucia
St. Lucia is one of my favorite destinations for travelers who want a little bit of everything: beaches, mountains, rainforest, waterfalls, snorkeling, sailing and, of course, the iconic Pitons.
It’s also one of my top honeymoon destinations because couples can combine an incredible resort experience with genuine adventure.
One thing to understand before choosing St. Lucia: where you stay matters. It’s a mountainous island with winding roads, and getting between the north and south can take considerable time. If exploring the Pitons and Soufrière is high on your list, I take that into consideration when deciding where my clients should stay.
Dominica
Dominica is for the traveler who puts nature and adventure ahead of luxury beaches. Hiking, waterfalls, rainforest and hot springs are the draw here. If your idea of paradise involves hiking boots as often as flip-flops, take a closer look.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico gives you tremendous variety. You can combine beaches with El Yunque rainforest, historic Old San Juan, great restaurants and nightlife. It’s particularly good when two travelers don’t have exactly the same vacation style.
If You’re Planning a Honeymoon or Romantic Getaway
Consider: St. Lucia, Antigua, Anguilla or Grenada
The best honeymoon destination isn’t automatically the island with the prettiest beach. Think about what you actually want to do together once you’re there.
St. Lucia
For couples who want romance, spectacular scenery and adventure, St. Lucia is hard to beat. You can spend one day doing absolutely nothing at your resort and the next sailing beneath the Pitons, hiking, snorkeling or exploring waterfalls.
Antigua
If beautiful beaches and a romantic resort are at the top of your honeymoon wish list, Antigua is one of my favorites. It’s particularly appealing to couples who want a more beach-focused honeymoon.
Anguilla
Choose Anguilla for quiet luxury, fantastic beaches and great dining. It works beautifully for couples who want relaxation and privacy without needing an endless list of excursions.
Grenada
Lush, romantic and a little more under-the-radar, Grenada is worth considering if you want beautiful scenery and a more intimate Caribbean experience.
If You Love an All-Inclusive Resort
Consider: Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Antigua or St. Lucia
Sometimes the resort itself is the vacation — and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
Jamaica
Jamaica offers an enormous variety of all-inclusive resorts for couples, honeymooners and families. You also have plenty to explore beyond the resort, from waterfalls and rafting to food and music.
Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic has one of the Caribbean’s largest selections of all-inclusive resorts, including everything from affordable family properties to high-end adults-only resorts.
Antigua
Antigua combines some excellent all-inclusive resorts with beautiful beaches, making it especially appealing to couples.
St. Lucia
St. Lucia works particularly well for travelers who want an all-inclusive home base but also plan to get off the property and experience the destination.
If Food and Culture Are Just as Important as the Beach
Consider: Barbados, Puerto Rico, Jamaica or Curaçao
For some travelers, eating at the same resort every night sounds like the opposite of a vacation.
If you’re already researching restaurants before you’ve even booked your flight, these islands deserve a closer look.
Barbados
Barbados combines beautiful beaches with history, culture and a fantastic food scene. It’s a particularly good fit for travelers who want a polished Caribbean vacation but don’t want to feel confined to their resort.
Puerto Rico
Come for the beaches, but make time for the food, Old San Juan and nightlife. Puerto Rico is one of the easiest places to combine a beach vacation with a city and cultural experience.
Jamaica
Jamaica has a personality all its own. Food, music and culture are a huge part of the experience, especially if you’re willing to venture beyond the resort.
Curaçao
Colorful Willemstad, Dutch-Caribbean influences, snorkeling and small beaches give Curaçao a completely different feel from many other Caribbean destinations.
If You Want to Rent a Car and Explore
Consider: Aruba, Curaçao, Barbados or Puerto Rico
If your ideal vacation involves waking up, getting in the car and seeing where the day takes you, these are some of my favorite choices.
Aruba
Aruba is particularly easy to combine with independent exploring. Spend time on the beach, visit restaurants away from your resort and explore the island’s dramatically different landscapes.
Curaçao
Curaçao rewards travelers who explore. Renting a car gives you the freedom to discover its many smaller beaches and coves rather than staying in one resort area.
Barbados
Restaurants, beaches, historic sites and different areas of the island make Barbados an excellent destination for travelers who like getting out and seeing more.
Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico gives you enormous freedom to create a varied itinerary, from San Juan to the rainforest, beaches and other parts of the island.
If You’re Worried About Hurricane Season
Consider: Aruba, Curaçao or Bonaire
The ABC islands sit in the southern Caribbean, outside the main hurricane belt, making them particularly attractive to travelers planning late-summer and fall Caribbean vacations.
That doesn’t mean weather is ever guaranteed — this is still the tropics — but if hurricane risk is a major factor in deciding where to go, these are islands I often consider.
If Snorkeling or Diving Is a Priority
Consider: Bonaire, Curaçao, Cayman Islands or Turks & Caicos
For some travelers, what’s underneath the water matters just as much as what’s above it.
Bonaire
Bonaire is a standout for divers and snorkelers and especially suited to travelers who care more about underwater experiences and independent exploration than a huge resort scene.
Curaçao
Curaçao combines excellent diving and snorkeling with small beaches, colorful architecture and plenty to explore on land.
Cayman Islands
Beautiful water, Seven Mile Beach and excellent snorkeling and diving make the Cayman Islands a strong choice when you don’t want to compromise between beach quality and underwater activities.
Turks & Caicos
Turks & Caicos gives you gorgeous beaches above the water and excellent reefs below it — a great combination for travelers who want both.
If You’re Traveling With Kids
Consider: Turks & Caicos, Aruba, Bahamas, Cayman Islands or Dominican Republic
There isn’t one perfect Caribbean island for families because a family traveling with toddlers needs something very different from a family traveling with teenagers.
Turks & Caicos
A fantastic option for families who prioritize beautiful beaches and an upscale resort experience.
Aruba
The beaches, activities and ability to explore independently make Aruba particularly versatile for families.
Bahamas
The Bahamas offers some huge, activity-packed resorts that can be ideal when keeping the kids entertained is high on your priority list.
Cayman Islands
Beautiful beaches, clear water and a relaxed atmosphere make the Cayman Islands particularly appealing for families wanting an easygoing beach vacation.
Dominican Republic
For families who want an all-inclusive with pools, kids’ clubs, water parks and activities, the Dominican Republic offers an enormous selection.
So, Which Caribbean Island Should You Choose?
Here’s the most important thing I tell my clients:
Don’t choose an island because everyone else is going there.
Choose it because it matches how you want to travel.
If you want endless white sand and turquoise water, I may recommend Turks & Caicos.
If you want mountains, rainforest and adventure with your beach vacation, I may recommend St. Lucia.
If you want to rent a car and explore, Aruba or Curaçao might rise to the top.
If you’re honeymooning and want romance, beautiful scenery and memorable experiences, we might start with St. Lucia, Antigua, Anguilla or Grenada.
And choosing the island is only the beginning. Where you stay on that island — and which resort you choose — can completely change your experience.
